Viking Orbiter map of Mars (1975) The twin Viking Orbiters captured more than 50,000 individual images of Mars, producing a global atlas of the red planet at a variety of resolutions. Although the high-resolution data was supplanted by Mars Global Surveyor's in the late 1990s, the Viking global map remained the best available to researchers for nearly three decades.
