Roving through June gloom Opportunity sprained her left front “ankle” in early June when her left front wheel jammed
at about 33 degrees toed-out. By mid-month she had straightened the wheel and roved
on to complete the walkabout atop Perseverance Valley. This special effects image of
the rover’s right front steering wheel was produced using “Virtual Presence in Space,” a
technology developed at JPL that combines visualization and image-processing tools
with Hollywood-style special effects. Zareh Gorjian, Koji Kuramura, Mike Stetson, and
Eric M. De Jong created it using a photorealistic model of the rover created by Dan
Maas and a false color mosaic of the Martian terrain. NASA / JPL-Caltech / Cornell
