Inverted valley in Arabia Terra

Inverted valley in Arabia Terra
Inverted valley in Arabia Terra This CTX mosaic shows an example of deeply-eroded intercrater landscapes somewhat typical of the Western Arabia Terra region. The rocks here according to Edgett are "composed of butte- and mesa-forming stratified rock." An inverted fluvial paleochannel cross-cuts the scene. Inverted channels like these are found throughout Western Arabia, particularly along the boundary near Meridiani Planum. The valley's original host rock has eroded away. Just about centre, the channel cross-cuts a crater that must have been buried at the time the channel formed. Mosaic of subframes of CTX D18_034340_1872_XI_07N010W and D16_033628_1871_XI_07N011W, centred near 8°N, 349°E. Images have been brightened, contrast enhanced, and sharpened to bring out features as the terrain is mantled with dust.
