Curiosity wheel "tested to failure" Curiosity engineer Amanda Steffy holds a wheel that has been tested in JPL's Mars Yard with the equivalent of many kilometers of driving over damaging terrain. This wheel has been tested to failure. It would still function as a wheel, but the sharp edges on the broken parts of the wheel skin could scrape other wheel structures, including a cable bundle that runs across the top of the wheel.
