Cruising toward winter As Opportunity drove farther into Perseverance Valley in August, she also drove closer to her
eighth Martian winter. Although the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere on Mars doesn’t
occur until mid-November of this year, the rover is already feeling the onset of the brutal season
with temperatures outside dropping to a bone-cracking -87 degrees Celsius (or -124.6 degree
Fahrenheit). From the raw Pancam frames the Opportunity sent home, Stuart Atkinson processed
this rover shadow selfie taken as the robot basked in the autumn Sun. NASA / JPL-Caltech / Cornell / ASU
