Australe Scopuli, oblique perspective A digital recreation of part of Australe Scopuli, a region near the south pole of Mars, derived from images taken by ESA's Mars Express Orbiter along with a terrain model. The beach-like stripes are caused by ice periodically forming and retreating as the seasons change on the Red Planet. The dark regions are covered in dust, with occasional spots of lighter ice condensed atop them. ESA / DLR / FU Berlin
