MSL Curiosity costs per fiscal year. The project began formulation in 2003 and entered the implementation (build) phase in 2006. Originally scheduled to launch in 2009, persistent engineering challenges delayed the mission until the following Mars launch opportunity in August of 2011, increasing the project's cost by approximately 56%. MSL Curiosity completed its prime mission in 2013 and continues extended operations.
