Financial Information
The Planetary Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (EIN 95-3423566) as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. We strive to be open and transparent with institutional information, so we are pleased to share our official IRS non-profit determination letter as well as our most recent IRS 990 tax forms and audited financial statements, below.
Members and donors to the Society may expect their gifts to support the work on our three core enterprises—planetary exploration, planetary defense, and the search for life—as well as to support services related to the membership itself (such as sending our magazine, The Planetary Report). For nearly 40 years, the Society has relied on direct communications via mail, email, telephone, social media, podcasts, videos, and our website to request contributions toward our cause, maintain membership, and to raise public awareness and support for our mission of empowering the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration.
As a result of the fact that we achieve some of our programmatic goals through public education mailings that include requests for contributions, and consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the Society reports a portion of specific joint costs from combined educational campaigns and fundraising solicitations as program costs.
