Description: On May 25, 2008, the Phoenix Mars Lander will arrive at the Red Planet. The lander was built in Colorado by Lockheed Martin. Slowed first by a parachute then by retro-rockets, Phoenix will descend to a soft landing on the northern arctic plains of Mars. Years of previous observations by spacecraft orbiting Mars indicate there are likely deposits of permanently frozen water ice just below the surface at this high northern latitude. Using its robotic arm as a backhoe, Phoenix will scoop up and analyze samples of Martian permafrost and soil with a suite of onboard instruments. Scientists are hoping for a treasure trove of new information about the history of Martian water and climate, and of course, clues about the past and present habitability of Mars. Phoenix is expected to operate for at least three months (and one or two more, if all goes well) before he onset of Martian winter brings this solar-powered mission to a close.

On May 25, come be a part of history, as the Museum broadcasts live NASA telecasts of the landing and the first images taken by the lander. Your host for the evening, space science curator Steve Lee, PhD, will explain the history of the mission and share more information about this fascinating planet. Snacks will be available while you‚re waiting for the ground- breaking photos. Space Odyssey will also be open. Ticket-holders are welcome to come and go during the landing event. A full-scale model of the lander (on loan from NASA) is on display at the Museum until May 5.
