Space Topics: Postcards from Venus

Contest Facts

Who can enter?

Anyone can enter!

How do I enter?

Imagine the surface of Venus from an above-ground perspective – a bird's eye view of a mysterious world whose volcano-ridden surface contains few impact craters, indicating a planet where resurfacing on a global scale has taken place within the last 500 million years. Create your "postcard from Venus," and then enter the contest at this web page. Your artwork should be the size and shape of a postcard.

Does my entry have to be as small as a postcard?

It doesn't need to be. But when it is displayed in the giant collage at ESA it will be shrunk to the size of a postcard, 10 by 15 centimeters (4 by 6 inches), so keep that in mind when you create your artwork. It definitely needs to be the shape of a postcard -- wider than it is tall, with about a 3:2 ratio of the long side to the short side. Computer-generated artwork should be between 600 by 900 and 1200 by 1800 pixels in size.

Can I create my artwork on my computer?

Yes! Just make sure that you don't directly copy somebody else's work. You need to create your own artwork. You can begin with photos if you want, but the artwork you submit must be the result of your own creativity. Computer-generated artwork should be between 600 by 900 and 1200 by 1800 pixels in size.

How long do I have to enter?

All entries must be received at The Planetary Society by January 13, 2006.

What can I win?

One Grand Prize winner will get a trip to the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, to witness in person the arrival of Venus Express at Venus! If the winner is under 18, the Grand Prize includes companion travel for a parent or guardian. Other winners will receive certificates and prize packages from The Planetary Society and ESA. Hundreds of entries will be displayed in a mosaic of photos at ESOC at the big arrival event. Two Special Prizes will be awarded several months later to the Youth and Adult whose artwork most closely resembles the surface of Venus as seen by Venus Express.

I don't have a scanner or a digital camera, so I can't make a digital copy of my artwork. Can I enter by mail?

Yes. Just print out the entry form, fill it out, and mail it in with your artwork. But The Planetary Society will not be able to return your artwork to you. If you can find a place to scan your artwork or borrow a digital camera to photograph it, you'll get to enter the contest and keep your art for yourself.
